Dear icon readers,
A few words about the icon…
According to the Greek Orthodox Church, Anastasis is the Resurrection of the Son of God representing the Glory of God and also known as the Harrowing of Hades.
In some renditions of this iconic depiction, Jesus Christ reaches to bring Adam and Eve out from their graves. The Apostles are mainly standing on the left side of the Lord. While members of the Christ’s family including St. John the Baptist, King David and King Solomon are on the other side. In more elaborate icons, Abraham and other people of the lineage of Jesus are included, while in basic ones there are only Abel, Moses and Isaiah.
Last but not least, we find open keys and locks which symbolize the freedom from the bondage of death underneath the gates of Hades which are thrown down.
P.S. Although each and every difficulty is coming to the scene, let the Anastasis of the Lord become our resurrection, the resurrection of our souls.
